To properly diagnose battery problems, it is critical to know the life cycle of a lead-acid battery and the factors that affect its performance. This data helps prevent future failures and also informs end users about proper battery care, use and maintenance.
Possible reasons for a failure of lead-acid batteries:
Incorrect battery selection: If the aftermarket battery installed in a vehicle does not meet the necessary OE requirements, the likelihood of premature failure increases. GS YUASA therefore recommends that you always install an appropriate high-quality battery according to OE specifications.
Wear and tear: The natural charge and discharge cycles of a battery lead to the loss of plate material and, over time, to a loss of battery capacity and performance.
Deep Cycling: If a battery is quickly and repeatedly recharged in a state of deep discharge – i.e. at less than 65% state of charge – this significantly accelerates the loss of plate material. It also causes their performance to decrease more rapidly.
Sulphation: This chemical process occurs in all lead-acid batteries as a natural consequence of battery discharge. For example, if the vehicle charging system does not charge the battery properly, if the electrical system is discharged by an uncontrolled parasite consumer, or if the car is only used for short, irregular trips and the battery is in a state of discharge below 12.4V for a prolonged period of time, sulphation can result. Permanent sulphation can cause damage and have a negative impact on battery performance and life, or even lead to premature failure.
Overcharging: If a fault in the vehicle charging system causes a battery to be charged at an excessively high voltage, damage can result from overcharging. This includes overheating of the battery, evaporation of electrolytes, faster plate breakage, loss of power or premature failure.
Undercharging: Damage caused by insufficient charge is also caused by a fault in the vehicle charging system. The battery is then charged at a lower voltage than is required for a full charge, which in turn causes damage due to sulphation and premature battery failure.
