Additional YUASA WC batteries without separate acid packs

GS YUASA has added new WC batteries to its portfolio that can be purchased directly filled and charged as an alternative to batteries with separate acid packs.

With the new acid pack regulation (EU) 2019/1148, what will be changed at GS YUASA?

With the new regulation (EU) 2019/1148 coming into force in February 2021, the sale of motorbike batteries with acid packs in the EU has changed significantly. GS YUASA has reacted to this and, among other things, added 13 new already filled and charged batteries (Wet Charged, WC) without separate acid packs to its portfolio.

What has changed with the new EU regulation?

Since sulphuric acid has been classified as a restricted precursor, end users who wish to purchase sulphuric acid with a concentration of more than 15 per cent require a valid official permit since the beginning of February 2021 and otherwise commit an offence. This also affects the sale of motorbike batteries with a separate acid pack, prepared for filling and activating the battery. More than 75 percent of all YUASA motorbike batteries were previously sold as a combination pack (CP). The new regulation has consequences for workshops and dealers:

1.  Workshops can only resell already filled batteries to end consumers.

2.  Distributors and dealers must first fill the motorbike batteries before they can be sold to end users without official approval. Commercial users do not need an official permit for this.

3.  Alternatively, workshops and dealers can directly use wet-charged types that are already filled and charged at the factory, as these do not fall under the regulation.

How does GS YUASA react with its portfolio?

GS YUASA informs all partners in detail about the new regulations and which penalties may apply in the event of non-compliance, which can be read in more detail here, among other places.

Moreover, in addition to its dry batteries with acid packs (CP), the battery manufacturer has added 13 new, factory-filled wet-charged types (WC) to its portfolio in order to support end users here and to relieve the burden on workshops and dealers. These include 11 new battery types from the YTX series as well as two new types from the YTB series, which in turn replace two older models from the YuMicron range of conventional and high-maintenance batteries.

The new WC batteries are available from GS YUASA and can be ordered.
